DIY – Glass Harp

Updated: Dec 29, 2021

Find out how to create musical notes by using recycled glasses.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Suitable For: 4 - 5 years old

Estimated Time: < 15 mins

Environment: Indoors

Materials:

  • 8 glasses of the same height and size (jam jars, coke glass bottles etc.)

  • Water

  • Spoon (wooden or metal)

  • Food colouring (optional)

Step 1:

Arrange the 8 glasses/ jars/ bottles in one row.

Step 2:

Pour water inside the jars in this order: start with a small amount of water, then gradually increasing the amount as you reach towards the opposite end.

Step 3:

Have the spoon ready and teach the child to hit the jar with control. Hit each jar from one end to the other. Ask the child to have a freehand on the melody that he/she wants to play.

Note: Play using these jars/bottles that represent whole notes (do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do). Your can also introduce playing structured musical pieces such as a Birthday Song or Do-Re-Mi song from Sound of Music.
